3rd December 2007 DON’T LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH THIS CHRISTMAS! |
|

Support our virtual gift shop and help us tackle equine suffering abroad
Meaningful presents with a difference that are sure to warm loved ones’ hearts…that’s the promise of the Brooke’s online virtual Christmas gift shop. And better still, every single penny raised from the virtual gifts purchased at our pioneering online shop will go to help working horses, donkeys and mules suffering in poor nations.
The Brooke Shop offers heart-warming virtual pressies that will move family and friends and directly help equine animals labouring in often atrocious conditions for desperately poor families through our network of free veterinary and mobile clinics in countries like Guatemala, Kenya and India.
It’s easy: simply visit `The Brooke Shop’ at www.thebrookeshop.org and choose a virtual gift from our catalogue. The gift’s recipient then receives a greetings card stating that a donation has been made in their name to buy one of a variety of items to improve life for a stricken working animal or animals.
Our virtual Christmas gifts 2007 include:
“Sweet Relief”: a one-day mobile veterinary clinic visit to a Pakistan brick kiln (£52.36). Kiln horses or donkeys can each carry up to three tonnes of bricks every day in searing heat - this gift can buy scores of these animals the life-saving attention of our vets.
“No Flies on Me”: In hot countries flies annoy, bite and spread infection that can even lead to blindness for equine animals. A fly fringe and training on eye care for an owner is a cost-effective solution (£10)
”Eat Your Greens”: Many working horses and donkeys simply don't have enough food to cope with their heavy workload. This gift buys a month's healthy green fodder - plus vital minerals and vitamins - for one animal in need (£18.37).
Last order date for delivery by post is 14 December but last minute shoppers can choose delivery by email as late as Christmas Eve.
* All our gifts relate to projects Brooke teams undertake throughout the year. Where the total number of gifts purchased exceeds the funding needs for a particular item or project, gifts will be used to fund other items meeting an equivalent need. The cost of each product includes P&P. A virtual gift pack includes: gift card, certificate and special fridge magnet featuring a cute photo of Prabhu, a donkey foal in India.
Brooke background
The Brooke is Britain’s largest overseas equine welfare charity. Founded in 1934 in Cairo by Dorothy Brooke, the charity has grown into an international lifesaver reaching over half a million working equine animals each year. The Brooke runs a network of mobile veterinary teams and field clinics in developing and Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt, Jordan, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Israel and the West Bank, Kenya, Ethiopia and Guatemala. By ensuring working animals are healthy, happy and fit for work, the Brooke estimates the livelihoods of over three million people can be safeguarded. By 2011, the Brooke hopes to extend its reach to five million working equine animals suffering most in the world.

10th September 2007 RED CELL STILL THE TOP PERFORMER |
|

With a potential shortage of good quality hay and the reduced feed value of late
cut hay, horse owners will need to pay particular attention to their horse’s diet
this winter. The Horse Health range from Farnam offers nutritional and healthcare
products to help horse owners to meet their horses’ needs and is renowned throughout
the World for first class quality and results.
Regarded as the feed supplement of choice for performance horses, Red Cell has stood
the test of time and is widely used as a general supplement for all types of equine.
Leslie Sutcliffe is the principal UK distributor and reports that demand is still as
strong as ever.
"Red Cell is still relied upon to provide the essential vitamins, minerals and blood
building ingredients that may be lacking in the feed, either due to reduced feed value
of forage or as a result of mixing different feed stuffs. When it comes to feeding top
performers, Red Cell is still the one to beat", says Leslie.
Farnam's Weight Builder supplement is ideal for horses prone to losing weight during the
colder months, and wise horse owners will start feeding the product in the autumn to
ensure no loss of condition. Weight Builder provides extra calories for healthy weight,
body condition and fuel for performance, without the digestive upset or uncontrolled
energy that grain can cause.

18th July 2007 Equipoise PREbiotic - reduce your feed bills and see an improvement in condition |
|

Horse and pony ownership can be an expensive business, the necessities such as feeding, shoeing and veterinary care
soon mount up, let alone tack and other essentials. So what if you could save money on your feed bills AND improve
your horses’ health at the same time?
It is well documented that digestive stress, which can be triggered by several factors including travelling,
competition and environmental and routine changes can have an adverse affect on our horses. Animals suffering
from digestive stress may exhibit signs of nappy, moody and uncooperative behaviour, all of which can have a
disastrous impact on performance. Any stress whether major or minor has a disruptive affect on the beneficial
bacteria in the horse’s gut, depleting numbers, resulting in an acid imbalance. When this happens, feed is
under-utilised, leaving your horse under-nourished and you out of pocket. No amount of extra feed will help and
may in fact, just make matters worse.
There is much publicity for the human market on the positive effects that supporting and maintaining a healthy
digestive system can bring. The same principles apply to our horses and ponies. In our horses, improved gut
function can maintain condition on less feed and reduce the signs of digestive disorders such as grass belly,
sensitivity, gassiness and looseness.
Equipoise PREbiotic is an innovative dietary supplement that maintains a healthy, balanced digestive system by
selectively feeding the existing beneficial bacteria in the gut to maintain optimum pH balance and a natural
barrier to invasion by unwanted pathogens.
Unlike a probiotic, which when added to the diet tend to flush straight through the gut, Equipoise PREbiotic
goes on working, supporting and feeding the good bacteria already present in the gut, enabling the numbers to
increase naturally, to keep the digestive system working at optimum levels. With higher bacterial numbers,
and a balanced gut, behavioural and digestive upset should be reduced.
Ideal for all equines Equipoise PREbiotic can be added to the normal feeding regime.

30th April 2007 BURGHLEY TO HOST RACEHORSE QUALIFIER |
|
Burghley Horse Trials is to host the final qualifier for the 2007 Racehorse To Riding Horse Show Championship, sponsored by South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB). The class will run on Sunday 2nd September and will be organised by Ponies UK in conjunction with the Ponies UK Burghley Event Pony Class, also sponsored by SEIB.
The competition atmosphere combined with the magnificent backdrop of Burghley House provides an ideal setting for the qualifier and competitors will be vying for a place in the Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championship, held at the Horse Of The Year Show in October. SEIB joined forces with Ponies UK as sponsors of the South Essex Insurance Brokers P(UK) Burghley Event Pony Class, now in its second year.
The SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championship has become hugely popular since its launch last year. The competition, supported by the charity, Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), is open to thoroughbred ex-racehorses only and, although they need not have raced, they must have been in training. The class may include hack, riding horse or hunter types and the standard is high, with the best of type being judged the winner. The series compliments the Racehorse to Riding Horse Performance Championship, a points based competition covering a range of equestrian disciplines.
South Essex Insurance Brokers, a leading specialist equestrian insurer, instigated the competition to support the retraining of racehorses and to provide a platform to show how a correctly re-schooled racehorse can become a top class show horse.
“Thousands of horses come out of training each year, and this class illustrates how, with time and patience, these horses can be re-schooled to compete successfully in other spheres”, says SEIB Marketing Manager, Nicolina Mackenzie, who has been instrumental in getting the competition off the ground. “Our Racehorse to Riding Horse classes attract a huge number of entries and I am delighted that the final qualifier is to be held in the glorious setting of Burghley House”.
For more information on the Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championship or Performance Championship, visit www.racehorse2ridinghorse.co.uk or call 01708 850032.
Qualifiers for the Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championship will be held at:
20 May – Osbaldeston Equestrian Centre, Blackburn, Lancs
10 June – Arena UK, Allington, Grantham, Lincs
17 June – Unex Towerlands, Braintree, Essex

16th April 2007SEIB WEBSITES ARE A HIT |
|

As the showing season gets underway, there has been unprecedented interest
in the popular South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) Search for a Star series
with over 100,000 hits on their website during March. SEIB's Racehorse to Riding
Horse site has also attracted a huge response, with over 55,000 hits in the same
period, providing a clear indication of the demand for this type of competition.
Both sites were launched in February and provide prospective competitors with full
details of the qualifying dates and venues, rules and news as well as a very active forum.
The Search for a Star series was introduced by SEIB to encourage amateur riders to bring
out their horses and try their hand in the show ring, with the chance of qualifying for the
Horse of the Year Show final. Over the past decade, the competition has found many future
champions, including the 2006 Hack Of The Year, Almost Illegal, who was third in the Search
For A Star Riding Horse/Hack section in 2005.
The Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship was instigated by SEIB to support the retraining of racehorses.
The series has developed and now has a Show Championship with qualifiers around the country, and a points-based
Performance Championship for a range of disciplines. With the large number of horses that come out of training
each year, the competitions provide a platform to show how a correctly re-schooled racehorse can become a top
class show or competition horse.
"We are delighted with the response to our new websites, which shows just how popular these
competitions have become", says SEIB Marketing Manager, Nicolina Mackenzie. "Search for a Star is a great way for us to continue our
support of grass roots riders and the Racehorse to Riding Horse competitions show how, with time and patience, these horses
can go on to compete successfully in may different disciplines."
South Essex Insurance Brokers, leaders in the field of equestrian insurance, make a significant
contribution to the horseworld through regular support of a wide range of equestrian events.
Entries are already being taken for the 2007 Search for a Star and Racehorse to Riding Horse
competitions and there are discounts available for SEIB customers.

2nd March 2007 NEW SEASON, NEW SEIB STARS TO BE FOUND |
|

As the new show season approaches, South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) are looking forward to an exciting year of competition, and for the first time they have launched two dedicated websites to keep competitors up to date with the latest information.
The popular SEIB Search For A Star series was designed by SEIB to encourage amateur riders to bring their horses into the show ring, giving them a rare opportunity to qualify and compete at the Horse Of The Year Show (HOYS). Over the past 10 years many top show horses have started a successful career in Search For A Star classes, including last year’s HOYS Supreme Hack Champion, Almost Illegal.
Five Search For A Star qualifying shows are planned throughout the country for 2007, and each one follows the same format, with classes for Working Hunter, Riding Club Show Horse, Show Ponies and Show Hunter Ponies, Cobs and Riding Horse/Hack. The judges are helpful and always willing to give advice on how a horse may be improved, with successful riders being invited to a day of training and preparation before their HOYS debut.
The SEIB Search For A Star website – www.search4astar.org.uk - gives comprehensive information on the competition rules and a downloadable schedule and entry form as well as the latest news, details of previous winners and what to wear and a great forum where you can share your views on Search For A Star.
The SEIB Racehorse To Riding Horse Show Championship was instigated by SEIB to support and encourage the re-education of thoroughbreds taken out of racing and re-schooled and prepared for the show ring. To be eligible for this class, the horse must have been in training with a recognised trainer, although it need not have raced.
The series, supported by the charity Retraining Of Racehorses, helps to recognise the abilities of the many horses that come out of racing each year and provides them with a worthwhile competition opportunity. The classes are judged as for Riding Horses but the best of type, whether hack, riding horse or hunter, is deemed the winner.
Five qualifying classes are planned and the first two places in each class will be invited to enter the finals, held at HOYS in October.
Ex-racehorses in other disciplines are also recognised in the SEIB Racehorses to Riding Horses Performance Horse Championship. This competition will be run over the 2007 season and the results will be calculated on a points system. There are categories for Affiliated Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing, Showing, Endurance and Unaffiliated competition. Trophies will be presented to the winners of each category at the Supporters of British Breeding Awards in 2008.
The SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse website – www.racehorse2ridinghorse.co.uk - gives details of the Show and Performance Championships, with downloadable schedules and entry forms as well as the latest news, details of previous winners and a forum for sharing your views.
"The Search For A Star Championship is now well established and I am delighted at how popular it has become. I am always so happy for the owners and riders who dream of getting to HOYS and are able to fulfil that ambition through this final", says SEIB Marketing Manager, Nicolina MacKenzie. "I am also thrilled that the Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championship and Performance Awards are so well supported, particularly because it is wonderful to see these horses enjoying success in their second career. It can be very worthwhile and rewarding to take on and retrain an ex-racehorse and I hope that this encourages more people to have a go", she said.

15th February 2007 New Nupafeed L-Carnitine Performance & Stamina |
|

L- Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino type acid that is produced in the horse’s liver. It is this
L-Carnitine that triggers the process of burning fat to glucose, which the horse can then utilise as
energy. L-Carnitine also supports the growth of muscle cells so shortening recovery time.
When animals are required to participate in high demand activities that call for increased stamina
and energy, the horses’ natural system for producing L-Carnitine may not be able to deal with the increased
demand. Reduced levels of L-Carnitine can lead to fatigue and adversely effect performance.
Nupafeed L-Carnitine feed supplement has been developed to maintain power, performance and
stamina and is ideal for horses taking part in high demand competition and work where stamina and
good muscle function are of primary importance. Nupafeed L-Carnitine is easily absorbed into tissue
and provides an ideal supplementation to maintain required levels of L-Carnitine during times of
increased workload to maintain athletic performance.
Nupafeed L-Carnitine is TOTALLY LEGAL and can be added to the normal feeding routine.
You’ll be amazed at the results.
